Welcome to the 2019 Cartell Newsletter

It’s that time of year again, 2019 is coming to a close and January marks the start of a new decade. As we leave the 2010’s behind us we look forward to the new challenges and growth opportunities that the 2020’s will present, and hopefully the possibility of improved native car sales, along with the continuance of PHEVs and EVs growing market share.

Reflecting on the 2019 Irish auto market, new car sales were poised to experience a dip due to challenges such as; the wait for a 20 plate, and the increasingly popular import sourcing. Up to the end of November this year, the “cars only” New Vehicle Sales figure stands at 113,526. That’s a 6.5% decrease on 2018’s figure of 121,130 – same period. The results are similar when we include the commercial vehicle totals, 2019 standing at  149,802 – 5.4% lower than 2018’s 158,057.

As previously stated, one of the major factors affecting the Native Irish Car market is import sourcing. This year, from January to November, saw 98,488 imports (not including commercial vehicles). That is a 4.4% increase on the 94,171 imports of 2018. The main hypothesis for this revolving around BREXIT induced value and favourable exchange rates.

Staying with imports, 2018’s most popular imported vehicle was the Volkswagen Passat. This year, Volkswagen managed to hold on to the title of “most popular import brand”, but the Ford Focus edged the Passat as the “most popular model”.

Moving on to one of the more interesting market trends (New Cars) for 2019, we see the ever-popular diesel take a significant hit. Of the New Cars in 2019 only 53,402 were diesel, down over 10k units on the 66,075 of 2018. Is the population becoming that bit more “green” conscious, or are we simply fearing the monetary implications as WLTP and the newly announced NOx tax come into the fray?

Petrol power didn’t fluctuate much with 45,782 new cars sold in 2019, less than 1,000 down on 2018. The big movers in the market were Hybrids and EVs, particularly the latter. EVs more than doubled in sales since 2018’s 1,234, standing now at 3,381 for 2019 so far. Hybrids experienced a notable 39.1% also, with 2019 producing 10,960 sales to date. Whether it’s the improved battery-life/ranges, increasingly favourable price-points, or eco-consciousness, this definitely looks like the beginning of the end for the “dirty diesel”.
