Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) is a tax you must pay when registering a motor vehicle in Ireland for the first time. Once a vehicle is registered, a registration number is issued and a registration plate can be fitted to your car.
If you’re importing a car, VRT is one of the largest costs you’ll face, so it pays to know the figure up front rather than at the NCT centre.

It all comes down to the OMSP.
VRT is based on the Open Market Selling Price (OMSP) of a vehicle, the price Revenue reckons the car would sell for on the Irish market. The OMSP depends on five things:
What the car currently sells for in Ireland.
Cubic capacity and fuel type of the vehicle.
The registration year and age of the car.
The exact make, model and specification.
The overall condition of the vehicle.
