Cartell holds mileage readings from the National Mileage Register, NCT history and, for imports, the car’s UK record. We compare them against the reading you enter and flag anything that does not line up.
A discrepancy is not always fraud. A reading can be entered in miles when it should have been kilometres, rounded off, or simply mistyped. What matters is that you know about it before you hand over money, and can ask the seller for the service history that explains it.
Signs a car has been clocked.
On a modern digital cluster, changing the reading takes minutes and leaves no mark on the dashboard. The dashboard is not the evidence. The paperwork and the wear are.
Test certificates that do not climb
Every NCT and MOT records the mileage on the day of the test. In date order, the numbers should only ever go up.
Thin or missing service history
Garage invoices carry readings too, and they are harder to alter than a cluster. A long gap is worth a question.
Wear that does not match the number
A polished steering wheel, worn pedal rubbers or a collapsed seat bolster on a 60,000 km car do not add up.
A replaced instrument cluster
A new cluster resets the reading. That can be entirely legitimate, but it should be documented and the seller should know.
