What is the NMR?

The NMR (National Mileage Register) is Ireland’s first and largest database of recorded mileage. Cartell started collecting mileage when it launched in May 2006. It is integrated into all Cartell Car Checks. When you purchase a Cartell Car Check, you must enter the exact mileage of the vehicle. This is then compared against the NMR and a discrepancy will be returned if such is found on the system. The UK NMR operates in a similar fashion. Our partners HPI UK own and operate the UK NMR and Cartell are the only company in Ireland with access to this database. For more information and help about mileage and the NMR, please log on to www.nmr.ie.

How can I contribute to the NMR?

Everyday dealers, consumers and other motoring bodies are contributing to the NMR. It is in the interest of everyone to populate such a database so that vehicles with discrepancies can be easily identified. Every time you carry out a Cartell Car Check and you enter the mileage to check it against the NMR, you are automatically contributing to the NMR. The more mileages we have the safer our cars will become.

How can I change a mileage reading that I entered incorrectly?

If you enter a mileage incorrectly, please contact us immediately so that we can amend the mileage and so that we can ensure the mileage records are kept accurate on that vehicle.

So what results can an NMR check give?

There are two main results: No discrepancy found, or possible discrepancy. When the result is no discrepancy this means the NMR does not have higher previous readings for the vehicle. Where the result is possible discrepancy this means the NMR has higher previous readings.

What does Cartell recommend if I find a possible mileage discrepancy?

A possible discrepancy does not mean a car is clocked! If you find a possible discrepancy, contact Cartell and our Customer Care Team. A discrepancy means that we have readings on the National Mileage Register that are inconsistent with the mileage you have entered. All of the mileage information on the NMR is supplied by third parties in good faith and cannot be validated.

Reasons why a car could show up with a mileage discrepancy?

All mileages are inputted manually by various sources in Ireland and the UK. As these mileages are manually inputted, errors can be made. That is why it is important to contact Cartell when a possible mileage discrepancy shows on your report. The main reason that a vehicle may show a possible discrepancy is because the mileage was entered in miles instead of kilometers. In 2005, all new vehicles in Ireland were changed to kilometers only. Another reason is when an extra digit is typed in by mistake. For example, a dealer could enter 543,788 kms instead of 54,378 km meaning that when it’s checked again it will show up with a possible mileage discrepancy. Because of these reasons we always recommend that you contact Cartell. Sometimes it appears  that a vehicles odometer may have been deliberately altered to show a lower mileage reading. If this happens it is important for you NOT to disclose this information to the seller. Accusations against sellers in this regard can cause problems. Cartell is there to assist you by bringing together a substantial database of mileages but we are not here to pass judgment.

So if the NMR says no discrepancy then does this mean the vehicle is definitely not clocked?

No. Consulting the NMR is a very useful step for a consumer and many customers have told us they get great peace of mind by consulting such a large database. It’s a useful step which we advise a prudent buyer to take. However, the NMR does not have every mileage reading – and even if we did – there are no guarantees that the vehicle you wish to purchase is displaying accurate mileages. Other checks you can do include: looking around the vehicle for signs of wear and tear which indicate the vehicle may have done more miles than on the clock, consult a tradesman in the profession for help, run a diagnostic check on the engine (where possible), ALWAYS check NCT Certificate for recorded mileage records (if NCT is application for the vehicle, the Car Check will indicate if this is the case) and ALWAYS request for full service history (FSH) before buying and check mileage history listed on the FSH.
