How Irish Garda Cars Compare

On Mondays Motormouth, Daragh, Jeff and Tony outlined the high speed vehicles deployed by police forces to enforce traffic legislation. A fantastic self explanatory blog entitled The Twelve Coolest Police Cars in Action highlights some seriously fast police cars that we can only dream of having over here.

Number one on the list with a top speed of 225.19 mph, is the twin-turbocharged Mercedes  CLS V12 S Rocket used by the German Police force in its Tune it Safe Campaign.

However my favourite vehicle from the blog is the UK’s Yorkshire County Road Crime Units, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X fitted with a new Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system, capable of locating and tracking any fleeing motorist with ease. The Evo X FQ-300 kicks out 290bhp and hits 60mph in 4.7 seconds.

Or how about a Lexus ISF as used by Humberside Police’s Roads Crime Section. the vehicle proved to be exceptionally capable of remaining stable in high speed operational policing environments, despite carrying the extra weight provided by the £30,000 worth of on-board computers and communications equipment. The high performance Lexus IS-F features a tuned 5.0-litre V8 engine capable of reaching 62mph in 4.8 seconds and a top speed electronically limited to 168 mph.

An interesting article in What Car Magazine recently commented on the colours of UK police cars. In an effort to try and attain higher resale values, police forces are buying cars with popular colours similar to what the public are choosing. The silver Evo X ten shown above is an example of this new thinking. A quick look at Ex Police Car.co.uk gives a good indication of the types of high performance ex police cars for sale. These include a vast quantity of Volvo V70 T5’s of various colours and a stunning 05 Vauxhall Vectra 3.2 Sri with 117,000 miles on the clock for £2800. There is a Ford Transit for sale which looks like it was used for speed enforcement. Imagine parking that on the side of N4 for the crack. It’s amazing there aren’t more accidents where these vans are parked because people hit the brakes rather hard when they see them.

There are a total of 75 vehicles in the DMR Traffic Corps Flee (31.12.2008) as follows:-
• 51 Motorcycles
• 12 Marked (overt) Patrol Cars
• 8 Unmarked (covert) Patrol Cars
• 5 Patrol Jeeps
• 3 Mobile Speed Detection Vans
